09/06/2003 Entry: "We Have Liftoff!"
The whole idea of putting up a web site has been in the back of my mind for several years now, but recent events have inspired me to get started now. First, a friend from my childhood days ( Hi Cate!) mentioned getting a bunch of people together from our old neighborhood to hold an online chat and catch up with one another. A chat room was something I never put in place back in the old bulletin board days, and I thought that it might be fun to set one up for that purpose. Plus, if I did it here then everyone could avoid all the ads, spam, and other garbage that the public outlets don't really give a damn about.
Another inspiring event was the end of my current job. My company is relocating a bunch of us from Dallas to St. Louis. I was given an opportunity to make that move, or take a very generous severance package. For more reasons than any of us have time to get into, the severance package won out and I am staying in Dallas...for now, at least. My job over the last 4+ years with that company has put me in touch with dozens of good people, many of which I have become close to and rather fond of...as much as is possible with a phone/email relationship. I am going to miss a lot of them, and by doing this web site with a name so close to my own, I hope to give them an inspiration to stop by and stay in touch.
I have never been one to lack for an opinion, so I expect that I will have a good time using this weblog to define who I am and what I believe in. I know that once I get started certain groups are not going to like what I say about issues like bad drivers with cell phones, politicians who say they are compassionate conservatives but are really lying, jack-booted thugs, or even worse...New York Yankee fans. Whatever happens, however this turns out, no matter how much you disagree with me, there is always the comment option at the end of each log entry, and you are more than welcome to use it.
Putting up this entry is pretty strange since there are only few people who even know the site exists....kind of like talking to yourself. Hopefully, over time, some friends and others will find their way in here and add something. If not....what the hell, at least I have an opportunity to teach myself about web design. The geek in me has an insatiable appetite.

What are the odds that I would be the first one to comment on your first BLOG entry?...
Glad to see that the inspiration has finally kicked in and you are planting your flag into the turf of this "Information Superhighway" (I believe that phrase is copyrighted by Al Gore).
Also glad to see that you've taken positive control of your destiny by opting for the severance package... at least some people had the choice!
The good news: The Economy is improving!
The bad news: Companies are still slashing employees to reduce expenses and pad the senior executive platinum parachutes for seeming to boost revenues by reducing expenses by laying off employees who helped put them into a position where they could generate revenues to pad their platinum parachutes in the first place!
Ah, the Internet... a place where any guy with a BLOG provides an enticing soap box for naybob's (no relation to host) like me!
Congrats on the BLOG Bob and your site in general! Isn't Web Hosting fun!!
